LSU Equine Clinic Dedicates the “Lexi Suite”
Ilexi.jpgn honor of the extraordinary efforts of globe-trotting surgeons, LSU veterinarians and technicians, a determined team of horse owners, and a remarkable 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare, the LSU SVM dedicated “The Lexi Suite” in the Equine Intensive Care Unit at the LSU Large Animal Hospital on May 17. The suite is named in honor of Lexius (Lexi), owned by Ms. Julie Calzone & Mr. Robert Gardes.  Lexi is the mare who presented LSU with the opportunity to cure uveitis in North America through a procedure known as a vitrectomy. The surgery is rarely performed and was unprecedented at LSU.
Dr. Haynes named Dean of the SVM
haynes.jpgThe SVM is pleased to announce that Dr. Peter F. Haynes has been appointed the new dean by the LSU Board of Supervisors.  The announcement was made on May 29 by Interim Provost Harold Silverman and became effective June 1. Haynes has served as interim dean of the school since July 2006 after the retirement of then dean Michael Groves.  “I believe that Dr. Haynes has demonstrated the abilities and aptitudes needed for this position during his service over the past year as interim dean of the Vet School,” Silverman said. “He is committed to reinforcing our veterinary medicine teaching program, enhancing our veterinary and biomedical research activities and improving our service to the Baton Rouge community and surrounding region.”
Vidal receives Storm Cat Award
stormcataward1.jpgThe second annual Storm Cat Career Development Award has been presented to Dr. Martin Vidal of Louisiana State University. The $15,000 grant is designed to give an early boost to an individual considering a career in equine research and is funded by a personal donation from Grayson-Jockey Club board member Lucy Young Hamilton. It is named in honor of the internationally renowned stallion Storm Cat, which stands at Mrs. Young’s family farm, Overbrook Farm in Kentucky.
Dr. Vidal’s study addresses certain stem cells, i.e., bone marrow and adipose tissue cells. These stem cells are believed to have potential for treating tendonitis, bone and joint problems, etc. The aims of the project include determining optimum culture conditions for these cells and assessment of cell migration and survival.   read more...

Techical Large Animal Emergency Training Course
March 25, 26, 27, 2008
Fire and Emergency Training Center
Baton Rouge, LA

The TLAER course is a is a 3-day course sponsored by the LSART (ie. provided at minimal cost to participants). It is intended to train veterinarians, first responders, and other animal care personnel to work together to save animal lives without compromising human life. The course is an intensive hands-on & class room training. It will include water, mud, and vehicular rescue, as well as a helicopter lift, and a night search and medical rescue exercise.

The course instructors are Drs. Rebecca & Tomas Gimenez – both VMRT members [see www.tlaer.org]. Tomas is a member of the AAEP Disaster Committee and has recently written a text book on large animal emergency rescue.

We are very fortunate (and excited) about working with the LSU Fire Emergency Training Institute (FETI) here on the LSU campus. They are equally enthusiastic about working with us as well as collaborating on possible future course development for technical animal rescue training.

There are 30 slots available for this course in March. Priority participation will be given to LSART members and first responders involved in emergency planning and response in our state.
